Our most recent resident artist Karen Hampton, is using her residency to work on a very large body of work for an exhibition in New York. Hampton is a conceptual mixed media textile artist. Hampton stumbled across an amazing treasure trove of photographs of her own family from the days on the plantations through to modern time. Her work is haunting, using the imprints of past ancestors images on fabric, sometimes transparent silk, sometimes old sack cloth or sugar bag cloth, or her own specially woven fabrics which she then stitches into, adding text and symbolic shapes and patterns.
Karen’s show with us was entitled “STORIES FROM THE ANCESTRAL RECORD”
