Artist Dale Laitinen has been coming to St. Mary’s Art and Retreat Center for over twenty years. A very talented artist with lots of information to share with others. He has been holding his workshop every year in June and the next two years will be no exception.
This week long workshop has become so popular his class fills early. We had 18 artists in house learning everything they could from Dale. Each day Dale started off with a demonstration of work and in the afternoon did helpful critics with all eagerly listening to his helpful advice.
It is not all work an no play during this workshop as the group breaks on the weekend for a few hours to enjoy Virginia City and listen to the Comstock Cowboys at the Bucket of Blood. I was invited to dinner a couple of evenings and there was stories and dance. I enjoyed an interesting slide show comparing different artist styles and the “rules” of their art style but Dale indicated that rules can be broken.
The group created lots of beautiful pieces of art some completed other pieces to finish later at home. One piece that was created was a group piece to be auctioned at the Gold Hill Hotel during the fundraiser that is being sponsored by Gold Hill Inc and Comstock Mining on October 6th (more details to be announced) for the St. Mary’s Art and Retreat Center boiler/pump fund, as the group was concerned when brought to their attention that we were in need of a new boiler/pump and like others wanted to help.
